Our competition theme for July to September 2023 is an image prompt:
Description: a blue piano, with a tree stump for a stool, sits next to a bench under a shelter. There are trees around, and steps in the background up to a building. Image licence: Dietmar Rabich, Kelowna (BC, Canada), Waterfront Promenade — 2022 — 201951, CC BY-SA 4.0 Your characters might meet here, or they might be responsible for the presence of the blue piano by the road. Is the bench a bus stop? Is the shelter covered in solar panels? What sort of thing might be at the top of the steps or taking place in the building behind? Does anyone play the piano? How do animals react to it? Who is responsible for tuning it and how long will it last in the elements? As usual, the word limit is 500 words, we're open to any style, genre or form (including poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and scripts). We've kept the submission fee at £4 per piece, or it's free if you've attended one of our events in the last year. The deadline for this theme is 30th September 2023.
Other opportunities... We run a range of online and in-person events, which this term will include an in-person workshops, a weekly online feedback group, and a networking session for new authors - check out our events calendar for further details. You can also join a new online writing platform Rise and Shine which provides regular prompts, exercises, lessons, feedback and more. Best wishes, and happy writing! Alice |
